ABSTRACT

The commissaires of the Directoire exécutif, being responsible for the execution of laws, the maintenance of order, the supervision of elections, etc., is a unique institution of the French Revolution. They were born from the need of the Executive Directory to have intermediary agents placed under the direct control of the executive power, on the one hand, and integrated into local reality, on the other hand, for the construction of a stable republic. Through constant communication with directors, ministers and other commissaires, they play an essential role in administrative and political decision-making of the government. The commissaires, on whom research must be deepened by the abundant manuscript sources, are thus important for understanding more carefully the local reality and the relationship between Paris and the provinces.
