ABSTRACT

The dissolution of the Jesuit in 1762 sparked discussion of the secondary education system in France. Focusing on the writings of three lawyers who opposed Jesuit education, this article attempted to clarify what kind of national education they advocated. They advocated the establishment of a state-led education for Nation and the same nationwide public education system. Their arguments were partially realized during the reconstruction of Louis-le-Grand College in Paris, and this became the starting point for ‘l’école normale’ to be realized in the future. However, most of the educational reforms attempted in each region failed, and the experiments in Paris were only partially realized. Although not fully realized, their discussion of national education would be further amplified during the French Revolution and would be realized more than a hundred years later.
