ABSTRACT

This study examines Pierre-Jean Mariette(1694-1774), a central figure in the mid-18th century French art market and criticism, analyzing his major works as an art historian. Mariette excelled in connoisseurship, collecting, criticism, and writing, and his activities illustrate the formation of art history as a discipline during his era. This paper focuses particularly on Mariette’s Abécédario, exploring how he integrated connoisseurship with scholarly methodologies in his art criticism and historical writing. By doing so, this study aims to identify the transitional nature of 18th century French art history and examine the interactions between contemporary knowledge systems and material culture. The discussion also considers how Mariette constructed his dual identity as an art dealer and scholar and the scholarly significance of his writings in the field of art history. Ultimately, this research seeks to systematically understand the development of art historical discourse in 18th century France through Mariette’s contributions.
