ABSTRACT

In 21st century somatic movement therapy stands out as an alternative medicine. Especially the Topf Technique which is one of the somatic movement therapies is very useful for all people. Topf technique uses imagery to retrain the postural muscles, keeping the body in good alignment as various movement combinations are learned. Furthermore, it creates a body awareness without unnecessary tension and increases range of motion. The quality of movements in Topf technique is free flowing, using a minimum of muscle tension in movements. By using gravity rather than fighting it, the muscles are lengthened gently. Meanwhile, the inner force seems to be strong and controlled. This concept is very similar to Sunmudo.Sunmudo is a training method in the form of esoteric Buddhism. This form has been secretly handed down through the centuries. Sunmudo is a way to attain enlightenment through harmonizing the mind, body and breath. The basic training consists of Zen yoga stretches, breathing health exercises and dynamic martial art. Each movement can be done slowly to furnish accuracy with breathing control while showing how to defend oneself. The purpose of this study is to compare the Topf technique which is based on Ideokinesis with Sunmudo. This study illustrates the principles and the structure of Topf technique and Sunmudo. Also the comparison of Topf technique and Sunmudo is explained with examples.
