The Comparison of the Effects between Body Alignmentoriented Dance/Movement Therapy and Chacian Dance/ Movement Therapy on the Body Image, Self-Efficacy, and Perceived Stigma of Chronic Schizophrenia Patients

ABSTRACT

Schizophrenia tends to be chronic due to the nature of the disease so that the schizophrenic patients’' have been isolated from the society and troubled in rehabilitation. Therefore the psychological rehabilitation program for the schizophrenic patients has been underlined lately to reduce the pathological symptoms and enhance the social adaption as well. This study is designed to clarify the effect of the dance/movement therapy program towards the schizophrenic patient’'s body image, self-efficacy, and perceived stigma, the psychological traits related to the rehabilitation. This is planned to compare the effects of two different dance/movement therapy methods, which are body alignment-oriented method and Chacian method. The target group for this study is composed of 27 patients diagnosed with schizophrenia and they are divided into 2 experiment groups and 1 comparison group with 9 patients in each group. The 2 different methods are carried out for 2 experiment groups, during 10 weeks from September 2009 to November 2009. The outcome shows that both of the dance/movement therapy programs has increased the schizophrenic patient’'s body image and self-efficacy. On the other hand, the perceived stigma has been decreased only in the group applied the body alignment-oriented method. This result will provide the preliminary source to develop the effective dance/movement therapy programs in behalf of the schizophrenic patient’'s rehabilitation.
