Tradition of dance and Dance pioneers in Yeongnam area -Focused on Masan area-

ABSTRACT

Masan which is located in Gyeongnam area was a cultural wasteland for the dance before 1945. But After that time there were full of people who were evacuated to Masan because of The Korean War. Ironically, The Korean War played a key role in invigorating dance of Masan area. Because Lee Du-hyeon, Jo Dong-hua, Kim Nam-jo and other people were evacuated to Masan, and there, they were leading to invigorate the regional culture. That time, Kim Hae-rang, Park Oe-sun, Choi Hyeon, Lee Pil-i met Lee Du-hyeon, Jo Dong-hua, Kim Nam-jo and they could become great dancers under the influence of these people. Kim Hae-rang is a pioneer of the dance in Yeongnam area. He is a person of Masan area birth and studied dances in Japan. When he was in Japan, mastered the technique of dance from Ishii Baku and Takada Seiko. In 1939, he returned to Korea from Japan and set up a dance research institute. After 1950, he settled down in Masan area and trained disciples. And there, he created special dance based on traditional dances which were remained in Yeongnam area. This dance was characterized by masculine and subtle display of dance. Park Oe-sun of Masan area is a dancer who played an intermediary role in establishing department of Dance in Ewha women's university. Her first teacher was Choi Seung-hee and then studied dances under Takada Seiko in Japan. After she returned Korea, trained disciples as a professor. She was a dancer who have made great achievements through create, educate and study. Choi Hyeon is a dancer who called as the last romanticist. He was the student of Kim Hae-rang and studied folk dance and creative dance under him. He also had a experience as an actor. After he came up to seoul, studied variety traditional dances. This experience was a great nourishment of his creative work after that time. When he was a leader of the National Dance Company, choreographed lots of pieces. There's something of a classical scholar in the way he looks. And he was a man of style, knowing how to appreciate the romance as a one of the most popular dancer of his generation. Lee Pil-i who is a native of Masan area have been devoted his whole life to develop of the dance in Masan area. She studied dances under Lee Mi-ra who was a student of Choi Seung-hee. After she came up to Seoul, stud ied dances under Kim Cheon-heung. Then she went down Masan, stud ied dances under Kim Hae-rang. Afterward she have managed a dance research institute and tried to develope local dance.
