AB - In order to discuss the politics of a gendered body, this study examined「 Raise the Red Lantern」by the National Ballet Company of China under the direction of Zhang Yimou.
The definition of body as a gender completely rejects the ontological status of human body as a simple tool. As human mind is understood as the center of social formation, human body is also recognized as the center of social formation. Now body is not an object but a subject of discourses. Discourses comprehend all political processes of a society. We can say that body is a subject of discourses and discourses comprehend all political processes. Body by itself has a political nature. Just based on this ground, the politics of dance can be understood and defined. Dance is a process that body as a gender reveals its meaning, and body as a subject of discourses is political by nature. Accordingly, dance is the exposure of discourses, and in this sense it implies politics.
In the results, it was found that, putting up internationally reputed director Zhang Yimou, the performance carries red images and folk plays containing Chinese nationalism in a contemporary sense. This is a strategy of internationalization for spreading the images of China with relatively diluted cultural heterogeneity. The dancers’body is used as a tool representing national images, and it is delivered as a body disciplined politically in the aspect of the ruling power.
