AB - This study focuses on the Feuillet Notation system, which is a method of inscribing Belle Dance, and a series of project towards universal language in the seventeenth-century Europe. In dance history, the Feuillet Notation system contributed to a universal acceptance of Belle Dance and its writing system throughout many European countries. During the seventeenth century, the search for a better language and the upsurge of interest in language-building occurred throughout Europe. In the subject era, development of various scientific languages aimed for being “universally understandable, philosophically based on correspondences between thoughts and things, written in empirical notation signifying ‘real characters.' In this study, I elaborate on how the inventions of new and universal languages significantly correspond to the development of the Feuillet notation system.
Like other universal language projects, the Feuillet notation system sought universal laws of movement and translated basic movement ideas into signs and symbols in order to allow communication among different traditions. Such a design seemed possible because it assumed universal reason or universal notions among diverse language speakers. Also, by focusing on the sense qualities and by trusting mathematical principle, Belle Dance and Feuillet notation acquired a status as an international language above other national languages of the time. Under the influence of scientific positivism, true and real knowledge should be clear and distinct one, which would be achieved by systematic observation and mathematical procedure. Universal language projects and the Feuillet notation system achieved such clarity and distinctness by relying on immediate representation of sense perceptions and geometrical formation of sign. From above discussion, I examine a cultural and historical significance of the Feuillet notation system. Situated in a larger context, the Feuillet notation system shares its premises and worldview with empirical science.
