ABSTRACT

Recently, Korean Government expanded art education in primary and secondly schools, for which 4,156 lecturers of art would be recruited and supported. The rapid expansion of art education needs a new curriculum. The gifted education of art promoted by the government from 2002 provides a good program for general students. In the area of dance, however, we raise an important issue in developing a new curriculum for dance education. We compare the curricula in some famous U.K. and U.S. schools with the Korean one. Gifted education of dance in Korea focuses on the development of technical skills, which successfully produced some world class young dancers. However, those in U.K. and U.S. emphasize rather general education of dance such as development of artistic feeling, creativity and presentation skill, choreography and critical understanding of dance other than the technical skill of dance. We propose to include those important factors in a new curriculum for the advancement of dance in Korea.
