ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to introduce the inaesthetics of Alain Badiou, a contemporary philosopher of France, and to consider the nature and identity of dance art shown in his “Dance as a Metaphor for Thought”. His thought may provide a new perspective of reasoning that enables us to discuss various works of contemporary dance. Badiou’s inaesthetics criticizes the relationship between the subject of thought and objects owned by philosophy and art, and it insists on the unique truth of art. Also, his inaesthetics explains the intrinsic elements of art focusing on Nietzche’s philosophy, and it defines the principle of dance based on the writing of Mallarmé. From this, we are able to explain body expressions revealed in dance works at the semantic level and to insist on the unique artistic truth of dance. This study is to become a preliminary study to introduce an understanding of inaesthetics and the details about dance works rather than his philosophical reasoning, and this study is needed and becomes meaningful in that it will be the foundation for forthcoming follow-up research.
