ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of ‘Koreanization’ of Koreanized social dances, focusing on the characteristics of movements. The study looked at these characteristics with the effort-shape theory of ‘Laban Movement Analysis’(LMA), an analysis for studying the qualitative elements of movements. Three features of Koreanization of the dances are identified. First, unique repertoires such as jirubak, burus and teuloteu have been created, and these are enjoyed only in Korea. Second, transformations of steps and movements are continued, and independent cycles such as emergence, spread, and decline of new repertoires are observed. Third, in the movements of Koreanized social dances, the movement characteristics of Korean traditional dances are observed. The movements that show Koreanization are ‘declined posture and knee bending,’ ‘immersing in dance without movements,’ and ‘improvisation caused by alternate beats.’
