ABSTRACT

This study aims to analyze images of air in the ballet La Sylphide(1832) and the contemporary dance Pneuma(2014), focusing on Gaston Bachelard’s dynamic imagination theory and the inner characteristics of imagination expressed through dance. Drawing upon the dynamics connecting the material and the archetype, first, I explore the images of air in La Sylphide in the context of the axiomatic metaphor par excellence of verticality and ascension. Second, I investigate the images of air in Pneuma from the perspective of open imagination, paying attention to C. Carlson’s notion of visual poetry. Finally, by in-depth discussion of the language of the body that is transformed through challenge, contrast, metamorphosis, and sublimation in the works, this study shows how the dancing body becomes a medium of poetic reverie that allows us to experience the dynamism of deep human beings as we move away from the object.
