ABSTRACT

This study examines Vaslav Nijinsky’s L’Après-midi d’un Faune and Jerome Robbins’ reinterpretation of it while focusing on narcissism. Nijinsky’s choreography shows the aspect of secondary narcissism since the main character goes on to object love, then gets frustrated, and returns to self love. Masturbation implied in the last scene shows the narcissistic object choice and the connection between the choreographer’s personal disposition and childhood. Robbins’ reinterpretation deals with narcissism through the fascination, illusion, and disparity that male and female dancers have in their mirror images in an American dance studio. Although this work suggests heterosexuality, narcissism and homosexuality cannot be completely ignored. I suggest that this dual structure reflects the social situation of the time which condemned homosexuality, even though it inherits the subversiveness of the original work.
