ABSTRACT

This research explores the convergence of dance and circus, and explores the meaning of the circusbody in dance performance when dance incorporates circus elements. It examines the physicality inperformance, and the resurgence of circus arts, and analyzes Möbious(2019), a collaboration betweenRachid Oramdane and Company XY, as an example of the incorporation of circus bodies incontemporary dance. Audiences interpret the circus spectacle through their past experiences, and becomes immersedthrough prediction and expectation. In this context, the dancer's body acts as a symbol, a conduit ofemotion, a performance tool, and a tangible presence on the scene. Sharing the visceral sense of circus can bridge the gap of dance abstraction and enable a range ofbodily expressions. Exploring these possibilities, as in this study, reinforces the value of live danceperformance in an era dominated by media and virtual experiences.
