ABSTRACT

This research investigates the notion of liveness in online streaming performances after the outbreak of COVID-19 by analyzing how the creators and audiences engaged in the performances perceived and experienced liveness. The research method includes a literature review and in-depth interviews. As a result, we discovered that creators and audiences in the theater field generally responded that they could experience a new sense of liveness in online performances. On the other hand, creators in the dance field tendes to evaluate the value of online performances as substitutes more negatively, while audiences recognized some of the usefulness and convenience of online performances as substitutes for stage performances and highly appreciated the new dimension of liveness provided by dance works that could only be realized through screen, such as video dance.
