ABSTRACT

This study aims to observe the universality of participants’ dance meanings at the performance sites of Ganggangsulae, a traditional dance with a long history in Korea, and Circle Dance, which was adopted in Korea during the process of cultural globalization in the 1990s. It approaches the universality of dance meanings observed in the performances of the two circle dances as intercultural cases of dances originating from disparate cultural traditions. Ganggangsulae and Circle dance coexist in contemporary Korean society as community dances in which women are the main performers. Despite the cultural heterogeneity of the two dances and the differences in their performance styles, the study mentions the similarity of the participants’ dance meanings observed at the performance sites of each dance. In doing so, it argues that the universality of the dance meanings of the two dances is linked to the intercultural nature of Korean society and the dance tradition.
