ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to find the aesthetic characteristics of Eun-Mi Ahn’s kitsch dance using Abraham Moller’s theory of kitsch types. The method of this study is a literature analysis centered on kitsch-related theoretical books and previous studies, and based on this, video records of Eun-Mi Ahn’s dance works are analyzed. Rather than adopting kitsch as the most appropriate or essential method to express the subject, Eun-Mi Ahn simply brings the elements of kitsch to the forefront audio-visually in her works. This method is Eun-Mi Ahn’s artistic strategy to attract the public’s attention through the crossover between popular and pure art. This study seeks to elevate kitsch theory, used at the level of impressionistic criticism, to the level of analytical criticism, and re-evaluate it to Eun-Mi Ahn’s dance. Through this study, we will be able to provide a theoretical basis for interpreting her dance as kitsch art.
