ABSTRACT

This study investigates the representation of female imagery in the Korean creative ballet Hoi Rang, focusing on the transformation of female identity in contemporary ballet. Using four analytical categorie - narrative, corporeal, sociocultural, and aesthetic - it compares female portrayals across Romantic, Classical, Dramatic, and Korean creative ballet. The analysis of Hoi Rang is structured around three themes: the formation of female heroism, reinterpretation of Orientalism, and the binary limits of gender performativity. The findings reveal that Hoi Rang presents a morally driven female protagonist and reconstructs non-Western identity through restrained aesthetics, while partially reproducing classical gender norms. This duality highlights both progressive and residual aspects in the representation of women. The study contributes to feminist discourse in dance studies and underscores the need for creative ballet to evolve as a living art form that reflects contemporary gender awareness and cultural identity
