ABSTRACT

This study employs a qualitative case study approach to examine how the South Korean media competition program Stage Fighter shaped social perceptions of male dancers. The research explores how media exposure challenged the gendered association of dance with femininity, which had contributed to identity conflict and marginalization among male dancers. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with nine professional male dancers and three core fandom activists and analyzed using an inductive categorical system and constant comparative methods. Findings indicate that the program reframed male dancers as highly skilled “professional subjects of art,” reducing gender bias. Production strategies highlighted a “transcendent body” that blended strength and fluidity, offering an alternative, emotionally expressive masculinity beyond hegemonic masculinity. Additionally, fandom activism acted as a cultural mediator, advancing gender-fluid expressions as “gender liberation” and generating “idol capital” that enhanced dancers’ social and economic visibility. The study concludes that media can meaningfully transform perceptions of gendered professions.
