ABSTRACT

This study examines the user experience of Diamond Dust, a VR immersive content based AI characters. To this end, a sequential explanatory research was employed. Quantitative findings revealed that users experienced levels of intimacy and immersion closer to “Agree.” Qualitative findings revealed that intimacy was fostered by the AI’s cute non-human appearance, soft verbal expressions, and recreation of its past narrative, whereas contextual misunderstandings and limited interaction time impeded intimacy development. Immersion was by audiovisual environments and real-time interactions, whilst technical errors and a non-self-contained experiential environment emerged as factors impeding immersion. This study is significant for broadly examining users’ intimacy and immersion in content integrating AI and VR in a basic form.
