ABSTRACT

This study investigates 1960s video recordings of Cheoyongmu to explore its post-liberation transformations and their implications for Korean dance history. Focusing on performances by Kim Cheonheung and Lee Kangdeok, the analysis highlights reductions and subtle modifications in dance sequences, revealing Cheoyongmu as a living intangible heritage continuously reconstructed according to historical context and performers’ artistic choices. Comparisons with the educational text Cheoyongmubo indicate that documented choreography often diverged from actual performances, reflecting both practical and interpretive variations in transmission. Both performers adapted sequences from Cheoyongmubo, illustrating that post-liberation Cheoyongmu was not a fixed form but a cultural practice shaped by individual interpretation and decision-making. These variations continued to influence contemporary transmission, emphasizing the period’s importance as evidence of dance’s evolving cultural value. This study thus situates Cheoyongmu within a framework of historical reconstruction and ongoing performative negotiation, contributing to broader discussions of intangible heritage preservation and transformation.
