ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to explore the methodological characteristics of arts-based research (ABR) in dance education and to identify its major modes of inquiry. Qualitative content analysis was applied to domestic and international literature related to arts-based research, qualitative research methodology, dance education, and performance-based inquiry. The findings revealed that ABR in dance education is characterized by six methodological features: emergence, embodiment, performativity, becoming, relationality, and reflexivity. These characteristics indicate a shift from language-centered representation toward embodied and performative forms of knowledge generation. In addition, three major modes of inquiry were identified: creation-process-centered inquiry, performance-centered inquiry, and narrative-based inquiry. The study suggests that ABR provides a methodological framework for exploring embodied, relational, and performative experiences in dance education and contributes to the expansion of qualitative research methodologies in the field.
