ABSTRACT

This study examines how contemporary dance works that foreground sensation generate aesthetic practices and meanings. Drawing on the genealogical significance of sensation in philosophy and dance history, it analyzes lecture performances, production documentaries, and reviews of Jungle (2023) and Sense Datum (2023). Both works employ sensation as a means of cultivating bodily awareness, exploring movement through the interaction of internal and external senses, and eliciting non-formative movement. However, they differ in orientation: Jungle uses sensation as a creative tool for choreographic exploration, whereas Sense Datum employs it as a medium for expanding embodied knowledge through physical thinking. Ultimately, Jungle produces a vision-centered metakinesis, while Sense Datum extends touch-centered kinesthesia toward the generation and sharing of affective knowledge. This study proposes sensation as a productive analytical framework for interpreting emerging artistic practices in contemporary dance.
