ABSTRACT

This study examined the content and documentary characteristics of Lee Sook-jae’s Hangeul Dance performance programs through a qualitative content analysis of 31 texts produced between Holsori Datsori (1992) and Deep-Rooted Tree (2012) The analysis focused on textual composition, modes of meaning-making, chronological changes, and documentary characteristics. The findings revealed that the programs combined factual performance information with selected texts that constructed linguisticphilosophical, bodily-aesthetic, and educational-institutional meanings of Hangeul Dance. These modes of meaning-making showed different emphases over time rather than a linear progression. The programs also documented how Hangeul Dance was described, interpreted, and culturally legitimized by selected authors from different professional fields. However, because these texts were produced and selected within the context of performance production and were largely favorable, they cannot represent objective artistic achievement or broader public reception. This study demonstrates the potential and limitations of performance programs as selective primary sources for examining the historical construction of meaning in dance.
