ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to examine the ekphrastic characteristics that emerge as dance is transformed into a text-based exhibition form. This study analyzes The Differential Room (2018), a text-based installation in William Forsythe’s Choreographic Objects project, focusing on Starting at Any Corner and Without the Use of the Arms. The analysis identifies two key characteristics: the relationship between language and bodily movement, and the organization of perception through text. First, text functions not merely as a representation but as a generative directive that combines actions and conditions. Second, textual structures organize the viewer’s attention through sequential and parallel arrangements. This study thus demonstrates how dance is reconfigured as text-based installation art, revealing the specific ekphrastic strategies through which movement is translated into textual form.
