ABSTRACT

The subject of this essay is the Chinese novels about Korea written during the 5.4 movement. This essay is an investigation of the epic technique of these novels and the recognition of Korea during the 5.4 recognition. For example Guo Moruo’ s <A Sad Story of A Cowgirl >, Jiang Guang Ci ’ s <By the side of Yalu river> , Tai Jingnong’ s<My Neighbor>, These works are set against the background of colonial Korea before and after the 3.1.struggle for independence. Regarding the characters and the plots, every work has young main characters who sought political asylum in China, Russia and Japan. These novels represent their love, friendship, their political exile and their resistance to Japan. The subject has one basic motif, which is sympathy for Korea and resentment towards Japan. As for the epic technique, the first person “I” is used continuously. The novel has the main character of Korea tell the story. So this kind of novel has the structure of both the exterior epic and the interior epic. Each author in that age had a strong personality by comparison with those before the 5.4 movement. They observed and described Korea from another side, from China, Japan and Russia. They had experiences of studying abroad and opportunities to observe the world outside China. At the same time the lesser countries in Asia were invaded by more powerful countries, and China was also faced with this danger. Strengthened by their apprehension , they started to have a sense of solidarity with Korea and the invaded countries. Chinese authors had two attitudes toward the recognition of Korea during the 5.4 movement. One is the negative influence of Korea on the future of China for example, Go Moruo’s < A Sad Story of A Cowgirl >,and Jiang Guang Ci’s< By the side of Yalu river >. The other attitude appeared after 3.1. independent movement. That is the attitude regarding as the model is Korea, praising the Korean rebel spirit toward Japan and encouraging the patriotism and nationalism of Chinese people. <My neighbor >by Tai Jing Nong expresses these. To be sure, these two attitudes are built on the solidarity with Korea. They connect the destiny of Chinese and Korean movement with these works.
