ABSTRACT

This study is based on Aristotle’s rhetoric theory and Cicero’s oratory, taking Zhang Taiyan’s speech 《东京留学生欢迎会上的演讲辞 Speech at the welcome meeting for international students in Tokyo》 as the research object, analyzing the content and rhetorical characteristics, and exploring How he used speech to propagate revolutionary ideas. According to Cicero’s oratory, speech is divided into five stages: association, arrangement, expression, memory, and presentation. Since there is no video for Zhang Taiyan’s speech, this paper analyzed only three stages. In the association stage, this paper analyzes the situation of rhetoric, the background of the speech, the type of the speech, the speaker and the audience. In the arrangement stage, this paper analyzes the layout of this speech based on Aristotle’s appeals: ethos, logos, and pathos. Good qualities such as humility and tenacity have won the favor of the audience. During the speech, he used syllogism many times to prove his point of view, which inspired the audience’s three emotions of friendship, indignation and pride, and convinced the audience. In the expression stage, Zhang Taiyan gave speeches in vernacular mixed with some classical Chinese forming a simple and formal style. At the same time, the speaker used rhetorical such as ‘引用 quote’、‘仿拟 imitate’、‘示现 show’、‘设问 question’、‘排比 parallel’. This paper only makes a specific analysis of the two rhetorical of ‘设问’ and ‘示现’. ‘设问’ has the function of attracting attention and inspiring thinking; ‘示现’ enables the speaker to transcend the limitations of time and space and list past events as arguments.
