ABSTRACT

In this paper, the author aims to examine the growth ordeals of adolescents in different eras and social environments by comparing the main character portrayals and growth narratives between Salinger’s ‘The Catcher in the Rye’ and Sutong’s ‘The North Area’. Both texts commonly depict the aspect of ‘father’s absence’. The absence of the father leads boys to wander with ‘deficiency’ and ‘wounds’. However, Salinger, through Holden, illustrates the narrative of adolescent growth evolving from despair to hope, stepping beyond disillusionment and wandering. Conversely, Sutong portrays a tragic narrative and growth that prevents normal development in spaces filled with oppression and control. Sutong’s depiction of the Southern boys and their tragic narratives represents portraits of the harsh growing pains of Chinese individuals created within the unhealed wounds and memories of the Cultural Revolution.
