ABSTRACT

The creation of Chinese poetry across the East Asia region reflects shared characteristics in literature and culture. Since ancient times, Korea has adopted the Chinese lunar calendar (农历), leading to the development of various folk festivals and customs under this system, inspiring numerous poetic works. This study examines and analyzes spring-themed custom poetry from the Goryeo period—such as those related to Lichun(立春), Dengxi(灯夕), Shangsi (上巳), Hanshi(寒食), and Qingming(清明)—as documented in the Collection of Materials for Korean Seasonal Customs. Through macro-level statistical analysis and detailed case studies, the research reveals that Korea’s festivals and customs were profoundly influenced by the lunar calendar, rooted in China’s ancient agrarian society. The perpetuation and evolution of these traditions in Korea were facilitated by the integration of cultural and geographical elements, as well as the recognition and inheritance of a cultural order centered on Chinese culture within the East Asian area. This highlights the cultural cohesion and centripetal force within the East Asian cultural-geographical area.
