ABSTRACT

This study analyzes the portrayal of merchants in two late Ming vernacular short stories from Ling Mengchu’s Amazing Tales collections: "The Luck of a Han Scholar Turns with Dongting Tangerines" (Chuke Pai'an Jingqi, Vol. 1) and "Cheng the Trader Profits from Hoarding" (Erke Pai'an Jingqi, Vol. 37). The analysis first identifies shared characteristics in the protagonists' dual identity as both merchants and literati, as well as their complex attitudes toward commercial activity. In contrast, notable differences are observed in terms of their return to hometown and marital arrangements. These findings reflect the author’s narrative strategy of navigating the tensions between coherence and contradiction during a period of rapid commercial development. Furthermore, by analyzing the symbolic implications of supporting characters who assist the protagonists, the study reveals the author’s intention to construct an idealized image of the merchant. Through these characters, who advocate for ethical business practices and embody intuitive market foresight, the narratives emphasize the value of integrity and prudence in commercial life. Such depictions serve not only as guidance but also as a cautionary message to merchants of the time.
