ABSTRACT

Based on Image Schema Theory within the framework of cognitive linguistics, this study investigates the phenomenon of allomorphic synonymy in Korean and Modern Chinese locative terms, whereby different positional expressions can denote identical or highly similar spatial relations in specific contexts due to the overlap of spatial semantic features. From the perspectives of spatial extent, orientation, and distance, the study examines allomorphic synonym relations among Korean locative terms in conjunction with spatial image schemas. Among 253 pairs of locative terms, 53 pairs are identified as constituting cases of allomorphic synonymy. Furthermore, most allomorphic synonym relations established in Korean are found to have corresponding expressions in Modern Chinese. This correspondence does not arise from formal lexical equivalence, but rather from shared basic spatial configurations underlying human cognition and conceptualization of spatial relations. Cross-linguistic differences between Korean and Chinese locative terms are primarily concentrated in a limited number of orientation types that are particularly sensitive to variations in spatial configuration.
