AB - It is well known to researchers that Yang Mu repeatedly traveled between Taiwan and the United States throughout his life. However, a closer examination of his life reveals that Hong Kong also played a crucial role. Especially in the last three decades of the 20th century, Yang Mu’s interactions with Hong Kong became noticeably more frequent. For Yang Mu, Hong Kong was not only a venue to participate in literary activities, a place to develope local sentiment and identity, but also a starting point to establish a new school. Therefore, this study will focus on the most significant period from the 1970s to the 1990s. Each chapter will meticulously tracing Yang Mu’s connections with Hong Kong in his roles as poet, literary critic, friend, traveler, and founding professor. This paper will then analyze Yang Mu’s psychological state, as well as his cognition, representation, and imagination of the place, as presented in relevant interviews, lectures, poems, and articles. By examining the interaction between the poet and the land, and the dynamic changes in the ways of “writing in Hong Kong / writing about Hong Kong”, this study aims to supplement existing research on the writer and texts, explore the perspectives and blind spots in Taiwanese literary history, and enhance understanding of Hong Kong’s historical context and cultural situation.
