AB - This study aims to apply the behavioral economics concept of the nudge to address coastal issues by encouraging voluntary behavioral change among citizens, and to translate this approach into feasible coastal management policy proposals. To this end, the study analyzed 83 domestic and international nudge cases to operationally define and classify nudge types, and conducted a keyword association analysis of news article texts over the past five years to identify key coastal issues. By linking the two analyses, the study identified appropriate nudge types for each coastal issue and designed nudge applications: a Blue Eco Dex for the Gochang Dueori village, and social-norm-based signage and patterned tetrapods for Haeundae-gu. In addition, the feasibility, expected effects, constraints, and outcome indicators with quasi-experimental evaluation designs were proposed for each intervention. The consultations indicated that, while some physical design interventions face limitations due to cost and residents' complaints, the “Blue Eco Dex” and social-norm-based signage show high feasibility for policy implementation. This study is significant in that it presents, at an exploratory level, directions for applying nudges as a means of complementing regulation-centered coastal management.
