ABSTRACT

Maechang was born in the middle of the Chosŏn dynasty. Most of other scholars studied Meachang’s poem about love, tragic love, the yearning for the beloved. However, this paper focused on studying Maechang’s romantic love poems. Maechang wrote a poem so skillfully and played a kŏmungo, a Korean harp with six strings, very well. In that regard, she was a kisaeng that well-educated classes of the gentry became acquainted with. It was her fascination. She had a good friendship with Heo kyun for a long time. But she only loved Ryu Hee Kyung. So she was interested in Tong poetry and wanted to write that style of poetry. At that time, Lee Dal, one of the Samdangpa poet, influenced Heo Kyun and Heo Nan Seol Heon for the Tong style of poetry. So Ryu Hee Kyung wrote a Tong poem. And it is certainly confirmed that he sent many poems to Mechang. Most of kisaeng wrote poems in the Tong style of poetry. And Mechang wrote them to correspond with Heo Kyun and Ryu Hee Kyung. In the end, Mechang’s creative method of poem was very specific. Because her poem represented effectively the yearning of her lover in it and she tried to expand her deep emotion in her poem as well as subject matter to her reader. It seemed that her poems had a feminine delicacy and grace. It was because she was a high qualified character. Therefore she contribute a great deal to the history of feminine literature in the middle of Chosun Dynasty.
