ABSTRACT

This study set out to organize the musical pieces in Byeongwagagokjip(병와가곡집) and examine its status in the history of songs with a special focus on Sakdaeyeop(삭대엽) and Nakheejo(낙희조) in the anthology. There is a strong possibility that Sakdaeyeop(삭대엽) was Yuldangsakdaeyeop(율당삭대엽), considering that the number of Sakdaeyeop(삭대엽) works in the anthology was very small, that a half of the concerned works in the later anthologies were Yuldangsakdaeyeop(율당삭대엽), and that the remaining works were sung between Woojo(우조) and Gyemyeonjo(계면조). Nakheejo(낙희조) was interpreted to encompass the musical pieces in the family of "Nak(낙)" including Woorak(우락), Gyerak(계락), Eolrak(얼락), and Pyeonrak(편락) at the time of division between Woojo(우조) and Gyemyeonjo(계면조), considering that its location was different from that of anthologies in the 18th century and corresponded with the anthologies of the 19th century reflecting the division between Woojo(우조) and Gyemyeonjo(계면조). When the organization of musical pieces in Byeongwagagokjip(병와가곡집) was considered including the character of Sakdaeyeop(삭대엽) and the location of Nakheejo(낙희조), it becomes apparent that Byeongwagagokjip(병와가곡집) was the best anthology in terms of number of works and also the greatest one both in name and practice throughout Joseon at the transitional point between the 18th century anthologies to the 19th century anthologies.
