ABSTRACT

This article aims to discover mentality of MokGye KangHon, who lived in the middle of Chosen Dynasty. This article will summarize and discuss his writing style and his mentality. MokGye inherited thoughts of typical YeungNam scholars. His writing style differs from any other scholars. Those differences are mentioned in followings. Firstly, his poems are metaphorical and humane rather than philosophical or natural. Secondly, it is hard to see sad or depressing words in his poems. Thirdly, when looking at the poems that he wrote is based on nature poetry. Lastly, he used plain language in his work. He did not use any complicated words when he wrote poems. The mentality of MokGye can be seen his poems in several ways. firstly, it is very realistic and romantic. Subjects in his poems are depicted directly and realistically. Throughout his style, it is possible to feel that he was in favor of romanticism. Secondly, the words he used in the poems are bright and delightful. This can be interpreted that he encompassed his way of thinking because he had gone through difficulties in life. This contributed to him to realize about the world. His poems were written after experiencing hardships, thus his mentality can be seen in his work. To summarize, this article sought to explore his poetry style. Throughout analysis of MokGye or this, it is shown that it is difficult to make a clear distinction between school of thoughts in the middle of Chosen dynasty. Therefore, more detailed research would be needed in order to classify scholars in that era. The limitation which is mentioned above will be dealt next time.
