ABSTRACT

The ultimate purpose of this study is to find methods for the most rational classification of authentic precedents in Sijos. Since there are huge amounts of Sijos containing an authentic precedent, it will not be a desirable method to cover all of these works from the beginning. The study thus decided to choose Kim Cheon-taek’s Cheongguyeongeon as its text and find a model plan for the classification of authentic precedents in Sijos. Theoretical plans for newly proposed classification were arranged as follows: the first round involved the major classification of authentic precedents into old phrases and previous examples. In the second round, old phrases and previous examples were further divided. Old phrases included medium categories of those from the mythical age and those from the historical age, whereas previous examples included medium categories of scriptures, history books, verse and prose, and novels. The final round saw the classification of old phrases from the mythical and historical age into small categories of figures and spaces. The newly proposed method of classification was applied to Cheongguyeongeon, and the results show that there were overwhelmingly more old phrases than previous examples, more old phrases from the historical age than those from the mythical age, and more old phrases referring to figures than those referring to spaces. It is expected that more specific analysis will result in a significant pattern. There are a couple of issues that should be thought over and judged in the actual application process, but they can be solved. In this aspect, this classification system seems to have enough utility and will be capable of classifying authentic precedents in all Sijos.
