ABSTRACT

In this study, we investigate identity of prose-like nature of saseolsijo that is frequently mentioned in related debates, and examine the attributes of saseolsijo in terms of its narrative style and structural characteristics. Based on these, we discuss the future direction of contemporary saseolsijo. A work of saseolsijo is formed based on the attributes of ‘weaving’. ‘Weaving’ is an expressive technique of saseolsijo and also one of principles of composing a poem. Genre attributes of saseolsijo lie in ‘structural freedom’ that strengthens a speaker’s narrative or creates images of an object with an expansionary statement through ‘weaving’. This ‘structural freedom’ can be seen as deviation within a standard. Considering this, it would be desirable for contemporary saseolsijo to succeed to genre attributes of saseolsijo, while aspiring to unique aesthetics that reflects the spirit of the times and contemporary sensibilities.
