ABSTRACT

This study set out to review the characteristics of Gasa(Nason version) in detail and establish the status of the anthology accurately based on the results. Gasa(Nason version) is an anthology of unique characteristics in that it contains Gasas, Gagoks, Sijos, and Geumbos and has Gasas put before Gagoks. Moreover, it includes many unusual musical piece titles such as Daesuchim, Soiok, Yasudaeyeop, Jonsudaeyeop, and Jeonghwasuyeop along with a separate item called Bujos between Gagoks and Sijos. Recognizing a need for a very precise review to figure out this unique characteristics of the anthology, the study focused its analysis on Gasas and Gagoks. The transcription information of the anthology indicates that it was transcribed in 1896, but the characteristics of the anthology is much before the transcription year, which raised a need to examine the year of its publication. The study reviewed mainly the patterns of Eobusa and Chunpungganbyeolgok being included in the anthology in its Gasa part and examined intensively the existence patterns of Dugeo and Yeochang in the Gagok part. The results suggest that the anthology was published in the 1840s. Gasa(Nason version) re-transcribed the original work published in the 1840s as it was, keeping the aspects of an anthology in the first half of the 19th century intact. In this aspect, Gasa(Nason version) holds its status definitely distinguished from that of Yulbo(Hangul Museum version), Sijoeumryul, and Sijojip(Yeondae version) that reflected the interest of their times in the process of re-transcribing the same original work.
