ABSTRACT

This paper presents a case study of classical literature education for elementary school students and highlights its significance, aiming to contribute to the exploration of methods for teaching classical literature at the elementary level. In Chapter 2, specific examples of classical literature lessons for elementary school students conducted at the request of the Korean Gasa Literary Museum for 2023-2024 are presented. The lessons focused on Gasa literature, with the content tailored to the students' unfamiliarity with it by teaching only the “essential core” elements. To make the lessons “engaging,” various methods such as using songs, nursery rhymes, and animations were employed, and quizzes were used as a means to help students “remember” what they had learned. Additionally, students engaged in creating their own works, following a four-step process: 1) learning characteristics by reading the works aloud, 2) filling in blanks in existing works, 3) creating their own works, and 4) writing their work on a fan and decorating it with illustrations. In Chapter 3, the significance of classical literature education for elementary school students is presented in two main points. First, such education helps students who find classical literature challenging to become familiar with and develop an affinity for it. Second, it encourages students to take an interest in regional figures and locations associated with classical literature.
