ABSTRACT

This study speculated in enjoyment and variation of the Jehwasi culture in the middle Joseon Period. The Middle Joseon Period was the time when outstanding poets were very active in writing poetry. The study investigated communication, sympathy and enjoyment of the Jehwasi culture in the following poets: Gani Choi Rip, Dongak Lee An-Nul, Osan Cha Cheon-Ro, Seogyong Yoo Geun and Seikju Gwon Pil. The biggest result in the Jehwasi culture of the middle Joseon Period was Jehwasi activity in Taneun Lee Jeong’s 『Samchongchob』. The 『Samchongchob』 Jehwasi depicted beautiful drawings of orchids, apricot blossoms, and bamboo trees as Taneun overcame trauma of the Imjinweran through drawing. It was a true character of the poets who enjoyed the Jehwasi culture in the middle Joseon Period. This study also investigated variation of Jehwasi in the middle Joseon Period. In the Confucian scholars’ families who were suffered from the Imjinweran in the middle Joseon Period, a trend to make an album of painting and poetry appeared. The site of a rural cottage which was destroyed after the war was restored through drawing and was made to an album of painting and poetry, which was recorded in 『Jukchondochob』. The 『Jukchondochob』 Jehwasi depicted feeling lost that his house, that is, the site of the cottage, was gone and the hope to restore from the trauma. Thus, this study identified variation of loss and restoration in contents of Jehwasi and long poetry where quaint fantasy and everydayness were shown. In addition, this study looked at the variation of Jehwasi as realistic and common poetry with drawing recording everyday life.
