AB - "Sigol Yeoseong Seorun Sajung Bom Gada" is a regional gasa from Yeongnam, belonging to the self-criticism genre of women's household songs, and it is significant for approaching the female speaker from an individualistic perspective, unlike previous discussions. This work shows three distinctive characteristics compared to others. First, it incorporates ”Umi Inga“ within the text. The speaker projects herself onto Umi Inga, shaping the ideal woman she aspires to be. Second, the speaker’s emotions and suffering are expressed through intuitive depictions, effectively illustrating the realistic issues, pain, and limitations faced by women of the time. Additionally, the work maintains formal characteristics of later versions of gasa, such as adhering to the four-beat continuous line structure and other stylistic features. Within this discussion, the response of women during the transitional period to modernity can be examined, revealing three distinct roles: daughter-in-law, wife, and person. As a daughter-in-law, she remains tied to the 'old' values and is unable to escape the constraints of tradition. As a wife, she dreams of family life through romantic love, embodying 'new' values, but she does not pursue them. Thus, the work shows a transitional shift from daughter-in-law to person, depicting a complex figure who does not choose between 'old' and 'new' values, but instead strives to assert her agency as an individual. "Sigol Yeoseong Seorun Sajung Bom Gada" not only offers a basis for research in the cultural and social history of the time but also provides significant insights by expanding the scope of studies on late Chosun women during the period of transition to modernity.
