AB - The purpose of this paper is to study the structures and messages of Hosea 4-14 with a focus on themes related to the three absences. For this purpose, this text is divided into three paragraphs focusing on the themes related to the three absences mentioned in Hosea 4:1-3, which serves as an introduction to Hosea Chapters 4-14, and the contents, structures, and expressions of each paragraph are analyzed. I would like to select four messages and argue that they were written based on three themes.
The first paragraph of Hosea 4-14 is 4:4-6:3, which focuses on the absence of Da‘aṯ Elohim (knowledge of God). In this passage, four messages are found sequentially: the relationship between YHWH and Israel, the problem of idolatry, the problem of trust of the great powers, and the exhortation to the people, all related to the absence of Da‘aṯ Elohim. Due to the absence of Da‘aṯ Elohim, the covenant relationship between YHWH and Israel was broken, and problems of idolatry and trust of powerful nations arose. For this reason, the prophet recommends the people to restore Da‘aṯ Elohim. The second paragraph of Hosea 4-14 is 6:4-11:11, which focuses on the absence of ḥeseḏ (love). As in the previous paragraph, four messages are emphasized here, all of which are related to the absence of ḥeseḏ. In particular, the absence of ḥeseḏ is described through the Hebrew verb ’ahaḇ. The third paragraph of Hosea 4-14 is 11:12-14:9, which focuses on the absence of ’emeṯ (faithfulness). Four messages are also emphasized here, all related to the absence of ’emeṯ. In particular, the absence of ’emeṯ is described with the words lies and deception.
This analysis reveals that Hosea 4-14 are not a large collection of words and poems without continuity, but a text with three structures and four common messages centered on themes related to three absences.
