ABSTRACT

This paper seeks to argue that the three themes of Micah 6:8 (doing justice, loving mercy, and a humble walk with God) and the concept of a remnant are key elements in composing the message of Micah. For this, I divide the book of Micah into three sections (Micah 1-2; 3-5; 6-7) based on the command to 'listen' (Micah 1:2; 3:1; 6:1) and the 'words of judgment + words of salvation', and then I analyzed the structures, contents, and expressions of each section. The first section (Micah 1-2) is aimed at the people, and the second section (Micah 3-5) is aimed at the leaders. In the messages of judgment of these two sections, the absence of justice and mercy is depicted as the greed, plunder, discrimination, and violence of the powerful and leaders, and the absence of a humble walk with God is depicted as idolatry. In contrast, the third section (Micah 6-7) summarizes the previous two sections and is aimed at the people and leaders. In the message of judgment, the absence of justice and mercy, unlike the previous two sections, is summarized through general examples rather than specific examples, and the absence of the people's humble walk with God is pointed out through the prophet Micah's passion and confession toward Yahweh. In the message of salvation, the remnant are described as connected to three themes, and are especially described as those who receive just treatment and love from YHWH and who will walk with YHWH. In this respect, the book of Micah can be divided into three structures, and the messages of the book of Micah can be seen as being composed based on three themes and the concept of a remnant. This analysis is a new attempt in the analysis of the structures and messages of the book of Micah in that it utilizes the three themes of Micah 6:8 to analyze the structures of the book of Micah, and views these as key elements of the message composition and contents of the entire book of Micah.
