AB - This study analyzes the book of Joel based on Judith Herman’s trauma recovery theory. The community to which Joel belonged had already experienced disaster and lived with the trauma and anxiety that such events could happen again at any moment. The nation had been destroyed, and the temple had collapsed, but the people regained strength and rebuilt the temple. The restoration of the destroyed temple would have been declared a sign of the new era of salvation. However, the unprecedented locust invasion once again devastated the land. In this dire reality, the prophet Joel had to comfort the people and remind them of their relationship with God.
This paper analyzes Joel’s prophecy, which sought to help the community recover from trauma. This process can be divided into three stages: (1) establishing safety, (2) mourning, and (3) restoring connection. Joel establishes safety by urging people to gather at the temple. He also helps the entire audience describe and acknowledge the reality of the disaster as it is. Finally, Joel repeatedly emphasizes that God dwells among them, restoring their relationship with God for those who believed they had been abandoned. Joel then helps the community recover from trauma by dreaming of a new future, supported by the solidarity and unity of the restored community.
