AB - This thesis attempts to make a study of the novel from the perspective ofbiblical archetypes, using the methods of textual analysis and contrast, in hopeof working out Shen Congwen's creative psychology mechanism and his pursuiton Chinese modern literature. The “Bible” prototype has effect on “Biancheng” inthe themes, structures and main characters, such as: the garden of Edenarchetype, original sin and death, fratricide archetype, flood and Noah's ark,the eternal feminine archetype prototype, good man suffering archetype etc. There is a need to explain that Shen Congwen's use of the Biblical archetype isnot to preach, but to convey new ideas of Chinese modern literature which hecalled the new religion of love and beauty. He put the “love and beauty” idealssustenance to the female characters hoping that the female characters can saveChinese modern society, just as God save mankind.
