A Study of Chinese-Western Contemporary Literature Propagation through Foreign professors of National Southwest Associated University

ABSTRACT

The National Southwest Associated University(國立西南聯合大學), or NSAU(西南 聯大) for short, made up of three of China’s most prestigious universities, Peking University(北京大學), Tsinghua University(淸華大學) and Nankai University during the Sino-Japanese War. NSAU Despite the temporal and spatial obstructive, it was actively engaged literary activities. Many of chinese literature at this time, obtained the contemporary English-American modernism in this place. On the other hand NSAU helped to publish the translation of the Chinese modern poetry in New York and London. At the point of Propagation Research, the Academic Area called NSAU deserves to be studied that it was place not only accepting to English-American modernism but also spreading of modern Chinese literature. And there were important cultural carriers in order to propagate western and Chinese modern literature in both directions who were professors of NSAU, William Empson and Robert Payne. As finding out what kind of works they selected and spreaded and how it came out spread, we will be able to better understand the background of Chinese literature at that time. The start of the study about contemporary literature propagation between western and Chinese in the 1940s, comes from understanding their activities as a cultural carriers.
