ABSTRACT

This study analyzed the altmetrics and citation characteristics of preprints in the field of library and information science (LIS) deposited on arXiv. By focusing on the social attention and citation patterns of unverified preprints that had not been published despite being at least a year and a half old, we examined the impact and potential risks of preprints in scholarly communication. The analysis revealed that, first, preprints classified under LIS were predominantly associated with information science and informetrics, as identified. Second, while dissemination of unpublished preprints through mass media such as news and academic blogs was limited, early sharing and utilization occurred within the academic community. Furthermore, some were cited in subsequent papers, leading to citations in high-impact journals (SJR). Third, cited unverified preprints had significantly higher Altmetric Attention Scores (AASs) and greater social impact than uncited preprints. This phenomenon requires editors and researchers to carefully consider the value and risks of utilizing preprints, and suggests the need for active discussion on future citation criteria and utilization methods for preprints.
