ABSTRACT

This study aimed to explore the feasibility of an animal-assisted reading programme, in which children from multicultural families read books to cats, and to examine changes in their reading performance. To this end, a total of 12 sessions of the animal-assisted reading programme were conducted with four children from multicultural families in Years 2 and 3 of primary school. Pre- and post-tests were conducted using the Korean Reading Assessment (KOLRA), and the results showed an overall trend of improvement in the reading comprehension domain, as well as positive changes in decoding, paragraph reading fluency and listening comprehension. Some children progressed from below-average to average levels, and behavioural changes were also observed, including improved reading confidence, increased voluntary participation and better control of reading speed. Although this study has the limitation of being an exploratory study with a small sample size, it is significant in that it has tentatively confirmed the educational potential of an animal-assisted reading programme using cats, as well as positive changes in the reading performance and affective factors of children from multicultural families.
