ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to phenomenologically explore the experiences of older adults participating in a book club and to gain an in-depth understanding of the meanings these experiences hold in the process of forming relationships with others. To achieve this purpose, semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with seven older adults aged 65 and over who had participated continuously in a book club for more than two years. The collected data were analyzed using Colaizzi’s phenomenological method. As a result, for the elderly, participation in reading groups was an important experience of improving the quality of life that provides emotional stability, social interaction, and intellectual and emotional satisfaction beyond simple leisure activities, as well as an opportunity to naturally establish relationships with others. In addition, reading promoted cognitive growth and self-reflection, and furthermore, it was found that emotional intimacy and belonging were formed in the process of sharing thoughts and emotions with new people. Therefore, based on these results, measures were proposed to strengthen the library's role as a community base space connecting the elderly and reading groups, to expand reading programs that can support the emotional stability and psychological well-being of the elderly, to form relationships between participants in reading groups, and to support network expansion.
